Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging biomedical imaging modality. In this talk the basic concept of OCT is introduced emphasizing the properties of and demands to the light source. The virtues of semiconductor-based light sources are emphasized. The focus will be on swept-source OCT and Fourier-domain mode-locked lasers based on semiconductors at around 1060 nm. Concepts for spectral shaping and its impact on performance will be discussed. Applicability in ophthalmic OCT is demonstrated.
